Purpose of the Position (Job Summary)
Smooth, reliable & efficient operation of 48MW/60MW/120MW Steam Turbines in a shift. Assisting Desk engineers and shift in charge during Start/ stop of plant & act smartly during emergency situations. Sample preparation for water and ash.
Key Individual Accountabilities
Strategy § Support safe, stable, and optimized turbine operation as per instructions from the DCS/CCR engineer. § Act as the field intelligence for the control room — early abnormality detection to prevent tripping and derating. § Contribute to long-term reliability of the turbine and auxiliaries through disciplined routine checks.
Financial § Prevent equipment damage by timely spotting leaks, abnormal sounds, high temperatures, or unusual vibrations. § Reduce auxiliary power through efficient monitoring of BFPs, cooling towers, pumps, and fans. § Support heat-rate improvement by checking condensate levels, heater performance, and steam extraction conditions. § Help minimize oil losses, water wastage, and chemical consumption through vigilant field oversight.
Customer/ External
Orientation § Ensure uninterrupted, smooth steam-to-power conversion for internal customer needs (generation targets, process steam). § Maintain compliance with vibration norms, cooling-water parameters, and lube-oil standards. § Demonstrate excellent housekeeping – a clean turbine hall reflects professionalism and safety culture.
People Orientation § Work as the hands, eyes, and ears of the DCS engineer — reporting observations clearly, truthfully, and on time. § Cooperate with mechanical, electrical, and Boiler teams for quick issue resolution. § Support new operators with on-job learning and safe operating habits. § Guiding and training support staff or helpers § Providing TBT/LMRA to the work force
Core operational
accountabilities Operation. Turbine & Auxiliary Monitoring · Conduct routine field rounds for: · Steam turbines (Reheat & Non-Reheat), Gland sealing system, Lube-oil system (main oil tank, coolers, filters, pumps), Hydraulic governing system, Turning gear system, Steam extraction lines and valves, Inspect turbine casing, bearings, and expansion indicators for abnormalities. · Check vibrations, temperatures, oil pressures, differential pressures, and leakages. Heater System (HP & LP Heaters) · Monitor inlet/outlet temperatures, levels, and drain systems. · Check for water hammer signs, unusual noise, or bypass valve issues. · Report heater performance deviations to DCS immediately.
Boiler Feed Water Pumps (BFPs) Monitor: Suction/discharge pressures, Bearing temperatures, Mechanical seal condition, Vibration and noise, Assist DCS during pump changeover or startup/shutdown. Condenser & Vacuum System · Inspect vacuum levels (as indicated), air-ejector/steam-jet systems, and leak points. · Check hotwell level, interstage ejector drains, and air ingress. · Coordinate with cooling-tower operator for CT performance issues. Cooling Tower & Chiller Units · Fan operation and vibration · Basin water level · Pump health and cooling-water flow · Inspect chiller units (control room cooling system) for temperature and pressure deviation. Raw Water & Steam Supply Network · Monitor raw-water pumps, valves, strainers, and lines. · Check steam supply headers, PRDS stations (if applicable), insulation, and leak points. Oil System · LO tank level · LO temperature · Coolers’ inlet/outlet differential · Filters ΔP · Respond promptly if oil smell, leak, or color change is observed. Logs, Samples & Housekeeping · Record all field parameters in logbooks with accuracy and discipline. · Prepare samples for lube-oil, condensate, CW, or BFP systems as required. · Maintain spotless housekeeping in turbine hall, pump areas, CT, chiller room, and raw-water sections. Quality / Environment / Health & Safety Management · Co-ordinate with lab for steam & water quality management. · Efficiency improvement § Monitor continual improvement in the operational parameters of plant. § Operate the plant as per SOP’s. § Ensure implementation and adherence to all quality and other initiatives laid down by the company from time to time, such as ISO, TPM etc. for equipment maintenance and safety.
